When Smart Bidding underperforms
Smart Bidding works best when it has sufficient conversion data (Google recommends 30–50 conversions per month per campaign) and a stable account structure. It struggles when:
- Conversion volume is low — the algorithm cannot learn fast enough
- Your conversion tracking includes soft events that do not correlate with revenue
- Seasonal or promotional changes disrupt the learning period
- Your account structure has too many ad groups competing for the same traffic
- You need to enforce business rules the algorithm has no awareness of
The alternatives — and when to use each
Manual CPC with automated rules
Full control over bids, combined with Google Ads automated rules for routine adjustments. Best for accounts with low conversion volume or very specific business logic. Requires more time investment but gives you complete visibility.
Target CPA with guardrail overlay
Use tCPA for bid optimisation, but add an external guardrail layer that monitors spend, pauses underperformers, and enforces brand rules. This is the hybrid approach — Smart Bidding does the micro-optimisation, guardrails handle the macro control.
Portfolio bid strategies
Apply a single tCPA or tROAS target across multiple campaigns. Useful when you want Smart Bidding but need Google to pool conversion data across campaigns rather than optimising each one in isolation.
Guardrail-driven custom automation
An external AI layer that ingests account data, applies your rules, and takes actions (pausing, reallocating, alerting) based on logic you define. No dependency on Google's algorithm. Every action is logged. This is what we build in the PPC Intelligence Sprint.
PPC Intelligence Sprint
We audit your current bidding setup, identify where Smart Bidding is costing you, and build the guardrail rules that give you control without sacrificing automation.
See the PPC Intelligence Sprint →How to decide
If you have more than 50 conversions per month per campaign and stable structure: use Smart Bidding with guardrail overlay.
If you have fewer than 30 conversions per month: use manual CPC with automated rules, and focus on improving conversion tracking before switching to Smart Bidding.
If you need to enforce business rules (spend caps, brand exclusions, segment constraints): add a guardrail layer regardless of bidding strategy.
